In The Beginning

In 1913 Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin fitted a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to the chassis of a 1908 Isotta-Fraschini racing car designed by Bugatti. They named the car Aston Martin, after Lionel Martin and the Aston Clinton hill climb racing course where the pair had already had racing success. Their first production car was completed in 1919, and the company’s joint preoccupation with production cars and racing success was established.
